3rd Annual Wine and Music Night

  • Unitarian Universalist Church of Annapolis 33 Dubois Road Annapolis, MD, 21401 United States (map)

United by their complexity of flavor, richness of color, and connections to history, music and wine are two things anyone can appreciate. Our concert of music and wine pairings returns for another season, and it’s sure to stimulate the senses. 2018 brings an added dimension, with a focus on dynamic female composers from the past and present. The ability of music to give voice to the less heard is the inspiration for this program, and it’s certain to inspire and excite any and all ears.

Living in Venice during the 17th century, Barbara Strozzi defied convention as a composer and singer of the Baroque period. Her work “Surgite, Surgite,” arranged for instrumental ensemble, highlights her flowing lyricism and compositional prowess. Composer Katherine Balch, currently pursuing a doctorate at Columbia University, has already created her own unique, intricate sound. Her string quartet, “With each breathing,” artfully captures, as she puts in her own words, “the intimacy of existence through sound.”

Joan Tower has been considered a titan of American composition for decades, having gained acclaim in the early 1980’s for her orchestral works. A piece on a smaller scale featuring a lyrical oboe solo, “Island Prelude” is a masterful evolution of the the woodwind quintet repertory. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for her vocal work, “Partita for 8 voices,” Caroline Shaw has been rising as a strong American musical voice, having already engaged in collaborations with symphony orchestras as well as Kanye West. “Limestone and felt,” a duo for voila and cello, highlights her skill at drawing whole sounds worlds from small ensembles while presenting soulful melody and harmony.
