Exploring Inner Landscapes. 7:30 PM, Saturday 8/4/2018

28.00

Music has the power to transport the listener to a specific time and place. It also has the power to disclose the inner state of the composer. What happens, what does it sound like, when a piece of music has both of these powers? In our final concert of the 2018 season, we explore music which creates and explores a world of its own making - the landscapes of the mind.

Arvo Pärt - Spiegel im Spiegel for flute and piano

Arthur Loeffler - Deux Rhapsodies for viola, oboe and piano

Carl Nielsen - Serenata in Vano, op. 69

Jean Sibelius - En Saga, op. 9

"...in no other work have I revealed myself so completely." - Jean Sibelius

Music has the power to transport the listener to a specific time and place.  It also has the power to disclose the inner state of the composer.  What happens, what does it sound like, when a piece of music has both of these powers?  In our final concert of the 2018 season, we explore music which creates and explores a world of its own making - the landscapes of the mind.

The Sibelius quote above is in reference to En Saga, arranged here for strings, flute and clarinet.  In this piece, a major step forward for a young Sibelius, sounds and images of the icy Nordic landscape call to mind the struggles of a young man. This work is paired with another Scandinavian work, Carl Nielsen's Serenata In Vano, a humorous depiction of Swedish country life.

On the program's first half, external inspirations create the impetus for the composer. Loeffler's Deux Rhapsodies portray the bucolic and grotesque worlds of the poet Rolineaux through the distinctive trio of oboe, viola and piano.  Arvo Part's deep faith and search for true expression led him to develop the pared-down language used in Spiegel im Spiegel, or MIrrors in Mirrors. The title alludes to the infinite reflections therein, which is expressed musically in a calm, meditative manner.
